The type of research method used for
this experiment is a field experiment. This kind of experiment will usually
take place in a natural setting such as a class room. This helps create a more
natural everyday environment
The advantages of a
field experiment are that they can provide better ecological validity. This is
due to them being carried out in natural settings. A field experiment can also
be carried out in large organisations and areas where there are many people.

The Disadvantages of a
field experiment are extraneous variables these can not be accounted for in an
experiment and can influence researched to bias conclusions. The participants
may also respond differently as they know that they are part of an experiment.
The type of sampling
method used in this research is opportunity sampling. For this research,
opportunity sampling was chosen as the sample of participants used were taken
from people who were available at the time the study took place.
A strength of
opportunity sampling is that the sample is readily available therefore making
it cheap, quick, and easy to carry out. Disadvantage is that the researcher’s
own bias towards the participants such as age or appearance prevent them from
participating. Another sampling method
that could be used is random sampling a strength of random sampling is all the
participants have a chance at being randomly selected. This removes bias from
the experimenter. A disadvantage is that it can be rather time consuming as you
need a list of the whole target population.
When conducting this
research, the experimenter would have to take in to account the participants
right to withdraw. This is because it is common in field experiments for
participants to be unaware they are part of an experiment, thus are unable to
withdraw from the experiment.
Semi-structured interviews are a form
of structured interview in which pre-set questions are used, although
spontaneous questions can be asked to give extra clarity on certain areas. This
type of non-experimental research is beneficial for this kind study as it
allows the researcher to use a combination of both pre-set questions as well as
spontaneous questions to gain better ecological and qualitative research data.
However, a strength is that the researcher can clarify any answers to certain
questions while still keeping control of the interview. A weakness of this type
of interview is that the participants who are taking part my give the
researcher the answers that they want to hear.
