Critical Thinking

Technical Features Of Technical Communication:TRUE : Whether ever

Technical communication: It is a broad field and includes any form of communication that exhibits one or more of the following characteristics:Communicating about technical or specialized topics, such as computer applications, medical procedures, or environmental regulations.Communicating by using technology, such as web pages, help files, or social media sites.Providing instructions about how to do something, regardless of how technical the task is or even if technology is used to create or distribute that communication. The value that technical communicators deliver is twofold: They make information more useable and accessible to those who need that information, and in doing so, they advance the goals of the companies or organizations that employ them. The following examples illustrate the value of the products technical communicators produce or the services they provide.  Features Of Technical Communication:TRUE  : Whether ever else it is, tech writing must be CORRECT and TRUE, period. If tech writing is not correct, you can throw it directly into the trash basket since nothing else matters as much.  CONCISE: Tech writing must be as brief as possible. If the writer can express something in 2 words, she should not use 3 words instead. COMPREHENSIVE: If you are explaining the functions of the buttons on a toolbar, you need to explain ALL of them.ACTION ORIENTED : You are writing a document to help users take action. Therefore, use action verbs whenever possible, especially in the beginning of procedural steps. ORIGINAL: “Cable A and Cable Z need to be connected now.” BETTER: “Connect Cable A to Cable Z.”ORGANIZED : Technical documents are organized in the ideal “tree view” fashion. The material is organized in layers, from general to the specific. The document starts with the general aspects of a system and drills down to more specific details later on.  Difference between technical and general communicationTo get a better understanding of the differences between the characteristics of technical communication and other forms of writing, let’s look at a comparison of technical writing and creative writing. Both are forms of communication. However, that’s really about all that is similar between the two types of writing. The subject for creative writing can be just about anything – from daffodils to rainbows – but the subject for technical writing is much more specific. That subject will be based on the products and services related to a business. The subject might be about a new medicine and how it will be developed, a new toy and how it will be manufactured or a new cell phone and how it should be used. The subject of technical communications is always focused on a product. Why it’s needed, how it should be created and what it should be used for. In other words, General writing is more about arousing the interest of the reader whereas technical writing has the objective of making the reader understand a topic in an interesting manner. 2 Features Of technical writing that I really like are :1 APPROPRIATE FOR INTENDED AUDIENCE: Tech writing must be appropriate for its intended audience. This audience can be a general audience, business people, or a specialized group of engineers and scientists. If the writing style and vocabulary does not fit the audience, tech writing will either be met with derision and criticism (because it is too easy for the audience), or will fly off over the heads of a puzzled audience (because it is too hard to understand). 2 LOGICAL and SEQUENTIAL: Technical writing information cannot contradict itself. All information, all steps need to make sense with respect to one another. If you need to open a lid in order to reach a button, you need to tell the reader to open the lid first and then to press the button. In the above case, do not instruct the user to press the button and then open the lid.
