In different campuses all over the Philippines, peer tutoring is encouraged among students since it does not only develop personal camaraderie in the school’s community but also develops good interdependence among students. One student assists the other in fulfilling the academic deficiencies. It develops a great friendship while boosting academic performance.
One of the challenges faced by students in a well-equipped school with high academic standards is the pace of teaching where some students are not able to cope with their peers, in regards to their different learning speeds and academic capabilities. Having a peer tutor may also help them in their respective academic fields where they may request assistance in repeating certain details in the discussions which they were not able fully to grasp.
As observed by Miller & Miller (1995), the international private, and public institutions’ peer tutoring provides an effective method for aiding persons with disabilities as well as their tutor. Both parties are to benefit from this method in a social and educational way due to the motivation they gain from the interaction happening between them.

There is an interaction between a pair or a group of people where they could express their ideas to others by getting involved in diverse activities in which they could acquire a knowledge from their peers. It enhances their skills in planning learning activities, organizing, and working with others collaboratively by receiving feedback and assess their own learning.
Topping (2008) “cited that peer tutoring leads to better academic performance and enhanced associations with peers. It is not only an option in learning but a very competent one as well. Furthermore, it does not only do a good job in enhancing a student’s academic performance as it also nurtures his associations with peers.”
Peer tutoring among students results to heightened scholastic performance and enhanced social relationships. This activity also increases motivation while holistically improving the students’ personal, and social development. All these benefit the teacher because this means that he/she gains the ability to further instruction by unconventional means while fostering an appropriate behavioral environment for the students.
The study of Mastropiere, et. al (2010)” showed that peer tutoring has social benefits such as higher self confidence and more positive attitude towards school. It was also observed that there is greater learning when peers are actively engaged in academic discussions among themselves. In addition, in peer tutoring, students can learn from one another. The peer tutor helps others learn difficult concepts and increases his own understanding of the subject matter.”
Studies conducted by Robinson, Schofield and Steers-Wentzell (2005), “concluded that peer tutoring increased academic achievement and motivation in tutors and students being tutored.”
Peer tutoring is truly an effective way to improve work atmosphere and environment. This means of sharing information and knowledge builds the confidence of the tutee to all the related tasks involved in the work/academic requirement. This also improves great level of teamwork between peers.

It also provides developmental skills. It allows students to acquire teaching behaviors and leadership roles. It also promotes an inclusive classroom atmosphere. Lastly, it encourages positive interactions among students.
