User-Centered design

Definition: (USD) User Centered Design which is also called “Human centred design” an approach which aims at increasing the usability of products, and therefore making them more effective, reliable, usable and understandable in meeting users’ needs. In 1999, Norman described user centred design as ‘Transforming difficult tasks into easy ones and designer requires to study the users before designing.

ISO 13407 (1999), states: “Human-centred design is an approach to interactive system development that focuses specifically on making systems usable. It is a multi-disciplinary activity.

 

The main purpose of user cantered design is that the user requirements are elected correctly, reflected properly into the system requirements and verified through by the real test

Some main principal of user cantered design are:

1.   Early understanding the user   and task

–      Structured and systematic information gathering (consistent across the board)

–      Designers trained by experts before conducting data collection sessions

2.   Empirical Measurement and testing of product usage

–       Focus on ease of learning and use

–       Prototypes testing with actual users

3.   Observed and analyse the user at work

4.   Iterative Design

–      Design, modified and tested product repeatedly

–      Allow for the complete overhaul and rethinking of early testing of conceptual models and design ideas

5.   Find out the task what user will do at present and what they intent to do in the future

6.   How the proposed systems will change the patterns of the work

–      More efficient, effective and safe

–      Reduce the development time increased productivity

–      Less user errors which can be correct later

–      Increased quality of services

–      Fewer training, support and documentation required

–      Reduce the cost of future redesign of the architecture

Disadvantage  

–      More costly

–      Take more time

–      Difficult to integrate into an existing process.

–      May require the involvement of additional design team
